My provider walked in and did not greet me or ask what was going on. She immediately said "so you're telling me your surgeon sent you here to have me look at his incisions." (My surgeon was a woman, first of all.) I came to see my primary care doctor under the advice of my surgeon because I had a constellation of symptoms after traveling internationally that she thought I should investigate - painful joints and swollen lymph nodes. Additionally, I had an infection in a year-old surgical infusion which the surgeon was treating with antibiotics. I am in an extremely stressful season at work and am not feeling well. I was hoping to receive empathetic care and an explanation of what some of my symptoms are and perhaps some suggestions for ways to help me manage them and deal with stress. Instead I felt like I'd done something wrong. I'm still undergoing treatment for breast cancer and could use some grace, empathy, and a comprehensive, collaborative approach to my care. I've had great experiences with Dr. Pittman previously - she delivered my cancer diagnosis to me with empathy and kindness and was supportive in getting my disability paperwork when I went on medical leave prior to my surgery. Perhaps this experience of her empathetic side made this most recent appointment even more disappointing - I was hoping for a similar standard of care I had received from her previously.
